Construction, shelving, 2015
bamboo and brass
site-specific
Bamboo boards of equal thickness, assembled with brass screws.
Something about the construction defies the viewer’s gaze and understanding, fostering a chaotic effect. The impression of disequilibrium arises from a strict application of the rules governing how the pieces are assembled. The planks are systematically placed slightly off-kilter in relation to each other and this, together with the nodal point created every time four planks meet, repeated as many times as the structure itself unfolds in space, is what generates its robust solidity and its aesthetic appeal.
The potential for lateral extension in Construction is limitless: it needs no supporting wall. It is freestanding and will bear considerable weight, such as books.
Each Construction assembled to date, and others yet to come, is like no other, without exception. Each is unique in terms of the size and place of the individual units. Here and there, delicate sliding panels of natural bamboo – the sole material used for the entire project – close off some or all of the compartments.
It is doubtless the piece that is most modest in materials and richest in visual impact that I have created to date.
